From ‘Wealden’ | Nancy Gaffield

Not losing momentum
pulse in sync with the step
the heart in thrall to the
                                             High Weald’s variety—
dormouse, coral root, bitter
                                             cress, ivy-leaved bellflower
pearl-bordered fritillaries
                                             hay-scented buckler fern
brown trout and bullhead—
the topaz light on the cliffs
at Fairlight, the rhythms
                                             of the natural world
distilled in the nightjar’s
                                             eerie mechanical whirrrrrr
